Favicon Badges are fully supported on Chrome, Firefox and Opera (if you care about IE, you may want to read this lovely thread to know about the limits of IE related to favicons).

Configuration

This extension for Magento provides the configuration menus in the backend:
System->Configuration->General->Design->Favicon Badges in Frontend pagesSystem->Configuration->General->Design->Favicon Badges in Backend pageswhere you can enable or disable your badges, together with the following options:

Favicon Badges in Frontend pages

Will be visible by customers, and you can setup colors, position, animation and shape of favicon badge, and decide what is represented by the number displayed:
  1. Items in Cart.
  2. Quantity of Items in Cart.
  3. Validation failures in forms.
  4. Customer's Orders with given Status.
  5. Customer's Downloads with given Status.
  6. Days left until given Date.
  7. Fixed given Number.

Favicon Badges in Backend pages

Will be visible by administrator and developers, and you can setup what is represented by the number displayed:
  1. New Orders
  2. Orders in Processing state
  3. New Orders and Orders in Processing state
  4. Errors in /var/report
  5. Errors in /var/log/exception.log
  6. Errors in /var/report and /var/log/exception.log
  7. All not completed Orders and all Errors.
